New York Red Bull is close to signing French striker Peguy Luyindula.
The 33-year old former Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon and Marseille man has been training with the Red Bulls during pre-season and the club is on the verge of securing his services for a cut price according to head coach Mike Petke.
"He's done exactly what we're hoping he would do. And the price is phenomenal, so as far as that's concerned, I know nothings been signed yet but we're very close, leaning toward the signing," said Petke.
"Not only his fitness, but his playing has risen every day to the point he's been great to have in practice. It's a very good option to sign him if everything works out perfect."
Petke added that there had been plenty of information provided by those in the know regarding the six-time French international.
"Not knowing much about him, everything from the personal concerns we had about him, we just didn't know anything about him," he added. "We did our homework, we made many phone calls, talked to people that the organization trusts over in Europe, places he played, and got very good reports.
"One thing we'd heard about is he'd been removed from the team at PSG. We wanted to know why and we talked to the owner of the team and it was stated the coach was fired three weeks after he was removed but he was brought right back to the team once the coach was removed.
"That answered a lot of questions for us. His attitude's been great, people like Thierry (Henry) and other people we trust have talked highly of him, Juninho, and his attitude's been great here."
