NYRB strike hero Cooper deserves USA call-up says Henry, Backe

Kenny Cooper scored his seventh goal of the season for the New York Red Bulls in their 2-2 draw with San Jose Earthquakes on the weekend.

The former FC Dallas and Portland Timbers striker was appearing in his sixth match for his new club when he received a neat pass from attacking partner Thierry Henry before sliding home to give New York the lead in just the fifth minute.

In the end, the result was not what the Red Bulls wanted but Henry, and head coach Hans Backe, suggest that 27-year old Cooper should be given a USA national team opportunity following his rich vein of scoring form.

"Kenny is doing a great job,'' said Henry.

"I saw (Backe) talking about him going to the national team. It's going to be a hell of a task; I think (Fulham's) Clint Dempsey is way up there and untouchable, doing a great job in the Premier League.

"But Kenny can have a good chance for the next (spots). I'm not the boss; I'm not giving advice to anybody here. I'm just saying the guy deserves it (with) what he's been doing.''
