NYRB star, Palace skipper, Brugge keeper in Australia squad

Australia boss Ange Postecoglou has named a 30-man provisional squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos head coach has announced a list of 15 Europe-based players with 10 from A-League clubs and the remaining five from Asia, the Middle East and the USA.

Australia's all-time leading goalscorer Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls) has been included as expected while fellow usual suspects Luke Wilkshire (Dinamo Moscow) and Mark Bresciano (Al Gharafa) have been included.

Crystal Palace captain Mile Jedinak has been named and is expected to lead the team in Brazil despite sustaining a groin injury on the weekend.

Other English-based players include Massimo Luongo (Swindon Town) and Bailey Wright (Preston North End) with the latter gaining his first call-up. Newcastle United's Curtis Good, who is on loan at Dundee United, has made the initial cut.

In the goalkeeping position, Club Brugge star Mat Ryan and Borussia Dortmund reserve Mitch Langerak join Adelaide United veteran Eugen Galekovic and Newcastle Jets gloveman Mark Birighitti.

Postecoglou, who will assemble the squad in Gosford from Thursday, said: "We're excited to announce the preliminary 30-man Socceroos squad for the World Cup.

"We've selected a squad we believe will represent the people of Australia with pride on the biggest stage in world sport.

"The squad has been selected with form and fitness as key indicators as well as having one eye on the future.

"We face a formidable challenge in Brazil but it is also a big opportunity and we head to the World Cup with no barriers as we look to write a new chapter in our rich football history."

The 30-man Socceroos squad will be cut to 27 for the friendly with South Africa in Sydney on May 26 before travelling to Brazil where the final 23-man roster will be named on June 2.

Australia are drawn alongside Spain, Holland and Chile in Group B of the 2014 World Cup.
