NYRB's Backe not expecting De Rosario to play for Canada at Gold Cup

Dwayne De Rosario is unlikely to suit up for Canada at this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup according club coach Hans Backe. The New York Red Bulls recruit has played for Canada just three times since 2008 and Backe feels the 32-year old attacking midfielder will bypass the tournament which kicks off in the States on June 5.

"I don't think so. I think he has turned that down. I would be very surprised if he went for the national team," said Backe.

"You never know but I'm fairly sure we will have him (during the Gold Cup). I don't think he has played (much) the last two years for them. I hope (we'll have him). Otherwise I will be disappointed"

Backe also said the recent performances of the former Toronto FC star had been very impressive and a major factor as to why New York have won their past three matches.

"He has been active. When you look at the Pro Zone, he's the guy with the most running distance in our team every game since he arrived, De Ro and (Jan Gunnar) Solli, who are on a high level running distance," Backe added.

"He's a very good player. For me he is the missing link in that position. He's definitely the guy who links up with strikers, and his work rate is phenomenal. I'm very happy with his performance.''
