NYRB eyeing Designated Player for after World Cup

New York Red Bulls will attempt to bring in a Designated Player after this year’s World Cup.

With speculation rife that that player could be Barcelona’s Thierry Henry, sporting director Erik Soler played down the rumours but did confirm that a DP could arrive at Red Bull Arena in July or just after.

"The people we are talking to now are not the Designated Player. That is coming later,'' Soler said. "Hopefully we'll have a Designated Player when the World Cup is over.''

Red Bulls captain Juan Pablo Angel was also non-committal about the Henry link but welcomed the talk of having such a star player come to New York.

"I think it’ll be great. Any good player that wants to come here will be welcome. If that players is the one we already know about, even better,'' said Angel. "If he eventually gets to come it will be phenomenal for this football club, but also phenomenal for this league.”
