NYRB ace Wright-Phillips: Gerrard and Lampard will have to live up to expectations

Shaun Wright-Phillips has warned Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard that they will have to perform consistently in MLS.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has joined LA Galaxy and Chelsea and Manchester City hero Lampard will suit up for New York City FC starting this weekend after successful careers in England.

Former City, Southampton and Charlton Athletic forward Wright-Phillips made his way across the Atlantic in 2013 and has been a massive hit with New York Red Bulls since but insists that the expectations on him were much smaller than what they will be on the pair of former England internationals.

"Steven Gerrard's got a way bigger reputation than I had to live up to, same with Lampard. People are going to expect magic from them, and they're going to have to do that every week," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "The fans at the Red Bull Arena know what to expect from me - I'm not the player those guys are. I work hard, try to get my goals and put the team first.

"But for them? It's going to be a lot different. They're going to be expected to put up good numbers for assists, get their fair share of goals and...I wouldn't want to be them!"

Gerrard will make his bow for MLS champions the Galaxy against Mexican side Club America in the International Champions Cup in Carson, California on Saturday while Lampard is set to debut for expansion franchise NYCFC in a league fixture against Toronto FC on Sunday.
