Luke Rodgers' playing status for New York Red Bulls is still up in the air but the club is now closer to knowing his situation.

The English striker is trying to obtain another working visa after using his initial 12-month permit in 2011 but has found it difficult in his quest because of a number of charges against him in his homeland.

But the Red Bulls are now confident he will soon be given permission to work in the USA on the eve of the 2012 MLS season.

"Luke met with the United States Consulate in London earlier today and the outcome was positive, as he took a step forward in his visa approval process to return to the country," read a Red Bulls statement.

"There are still issues to be addressed. However, we are hopeful and quietly confident that Luke will be able to join the club soon. Because his case is still pending, we cannot elaborate any further."
