David Nugent is in the early stages of talks regarding the possibility of signing a new contract at Portsmouth. The striker joined Pompey in 2007 in a £6million deal from Preston North End, but has struggled to enjoy a sustained impact at Fratton Park.

Pompey boss Steve Cotterill wants the England cap to stay with the Championship club and Nugent is ready to discuss a new deal.

"The gaffer has mentioned that he wants me stay and I want to see what is going to happen," the 25-year-old told The News.

"We've had talks but nothing has come of it yet. I've got to speak to my agent and see what is happening. Then I can get back to the club and we can sort out what's going on.

"The gaffer has been looking for players, but couldn't get any. It would be hard to strengthen this squad with the team we have.

"We are still low on numbers but we have great players. This team can move forward now."
