Nugent battling for Portsmouth stay

David Nugent has declared he wants to stay at Portsmouth in the wake of the club's FA Cup success.

Pompey recorded their first cup-final win since 1939 on Saturday as Kanu netted the only goal of the game to sink Cardiff at Wembley.

Nugent, who was a second-half substitute, had an unsuccessful first season at Pompey following a £6million move from Preston last summer.

And it was rumoured he was close to the Fratton Park exit in January, though he told Sky Sports News: "I want to stay here.

"I might not have had the season that I wanted, but that's football sometimes.

"You have on and off seasons and I'll come back after the break fitter and stronger and be raring to go."

Nugent is also looking forward to the prospect of playing in the UEFA Cup after Pompey secured European qualification courtesy of their Wembley win.

"It's massive," added Nugent. "It has got us into the UEFA Cup and that will be great for the fans to travel around Europe.

"It has put Portsmouth on the map again. We will be playing abroad and we are looking forward to it."
