North Queensland Fury midfielder Jeremy Brockie is determined to fight for selection for New Zealand's World Cup squad.

The 22-year old was left out of the All Whites' team which defeated Bahrain 1-0 in their final play-off on Saturday night to advance to the World Cup finals for the first time since 1982.

Brockie had missed the first eight games of the A-League season which eventually dented his selection hopes for the final qualifying phase but is now planning to work hard to get back into Ricki Herbert's 23-man squad.

''It's a big occasion, not only for myself but for my country,'' he said.

''It's been 27 years now so it's good to break that back and the boys looked pretty happy celebrating at the final whistle.

''It was obviously disappointing not to be there or amongst the crowd, which was a good one, but I was definitely happy with the result and hopefully I'll be on the plane to South Africa.

''There's 18 in the squad for the qualifying games and there's 23 for the World Cup so there's five spare places.

''Hopefully I can keep proving myself at the Fury for the rest of the season, extend my contract and then I can be a good chance of making the World Cup,'' he added.
