Nth Qld do the job against Melbourne Victory

North Queensland Fury have scored a narrow win over the Melbourne Victory in Townsville. The Fury scored a first half goal through striker Dyron Daal to take all three points and climb off the bottom of the A-League table.

The visitors started cautiously as the Fury had the better of the chances but slowly worked their way into the contest and begun creating chances of their own.

The Fury went agonisingly wide of the mark when Grant Smith's speculative shot from outside the area wasn't properly cleared by Rodrigo Vargas but fortunately for Victory keeper Mitch Langerak, the ball trickled past the upright.

Langerak then made an acrobatic save just prior to the half-hour mark when Jeremy Brockie tried to drive into the corner but the young keeper sent the deflected shot wide of the goals.

A few minutes later, the home side hit the front when Dyron Daal controlled a Robbie Fowler cross with his chest then turned and placed his left foot shot past Langerak.

Melbourne striker Robbie Kruse forced Fury keeper Justin Pasfield into making a save in the 35th minute with a well-struck shot but the North Queensland shot-stopper was equal to the task.

The Victory were close to equalising five minutes later but Vargas' free header from a corner slid wide of the mark and kept the Fury with their one-goal lead.

Straight after the re-start, the Victory went close again when Archie Thompson drove into the area but his low shot was well held by Pasfield and then it was Langerak's turn to make a low save from a Brockie shot from a tight angle just moments later.

Melbourne tried in vain to grab an equaliser but it almost came undone down the other end but for a smart Langerak save again from a Brockie shot.

It was a frustrating night for the Victory as the Fury held sway and moved off the bottom of the table whilst Melbourne relinquished their spot at the top.
