Ben Burgess suffered an injury-hit first season at Notts County and is now recovering with a hamstring problem following County`s pre-season defeat at Hinckley. The 29-year-old striker is fighting for his future at Notts after being transfer listed at the end of last season, and has shed almost a stone in weight during the summer in an attempt to get fitter.
Boss Martin Allen has backed Burgess to recover from his latest setback, saying: "It is a big, big blow because he was looking very sharp when he came on.
"If it's two days, two weeks or two months all I know is Ben Burgess has worked damn hard through the summer to give himself the best chance of playing well for this club and for that I respect him.
"He won't get down because it's not the end of the world. It would have been the end of the world if he had come back overweight, unfit and totally uninterested. That would have been bad news for all of us. But he's in good mental shape, good physical shape and he's a good player and we've got to help him achieve what we all know he can."
