Scotland assistant Mark McGhee says manager Gordon Strachan feels Steven Whittaker is ready for international action.

The 28-year old former Rangers defender made his first appearance of 2013 in Norwich City’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland on the weekend and has been called up to the Scotland squad for World Cup qualifiers with Wales and Serbia on March 22 and 26 respectively in place of Southampton’s injured Danny Fox.

“Steven is well on his way to recovery after injury,” said McGhee.

“His club manager thinks he’s in good condition, so Gordon brought him in.”
