Norwich defender Martin: Not many people in England take notice of Scotland

Russell Martin feels the English football community are not too bothered by the Scotland national team.

The Norwich City defender is a regular with the Scots and suggests that recent wins over Poland and the Republic of Ireland have hardly even made a ripple in the English press.

Scotland have been in great form under Gordon Strachan over the past 20 months, losing just two of 13 matches, but that has done nothing to change the minds of the Auld Enemy.

"I'll be honest with you, not many people take notice of Scotland down here. I'd like them to, because I don't think we get the respect we deserve as a national team, not down here," he told the Scottish Daily Mail.

"I always speak up for Scotland. I'm not saying folk in England are derogatory, exactly, but sometimes it's just like they say: 'Oh yeah, you got a good result …' As if it wasn't really anything.

"So sometimes we just don't get the credit we deserve. When you go away to Poland, beat Ireland, it doesn't really catch their attention. That's fine.

"As long as we get through it, we know how hard we've worked, how much we've improved."

Scotland currently sit third in Group D of Euro2016 qualifying ahead of next week's friendly with Qatar which comes prior to the June 13 qualifier against the fourth-placed Irish in Dublin.
