Norwich boss Hughton: We went strong and it paid off

Chris Hughton said he made a decision to field a strong side in Tuesday's Capital One Cup second round after the weekend's Premier League defeat to Hull City.

The Canaries eased into the third round with a 6-3 triumph over League Two side Bury and Hughton admits he did play a fairly strong line-up in order to record a needed victory.

"After Saturday we made a decision that we wanted to go strong," said Hughton.

"I think, with respect to the competition and to Bury, I wouldn't have gone as strong tonight but I must admit it wouldn't have been far from it.

"What there are is lads who need games, three out of my back four haven't played regularly - Martin Olsson, Seb (Bassong) and Ryan Bennett - and they need the games and I thought they came through it very well.

"It was good for those who got 90 minutes under their belt, they needed it. If you look at the side we put out it was strong enough and had a fair amount of intent in that team.

"There is no doubt we were disappointed with the result [at Hull] and certainly the penalty that was given against us. The best way to bounce back from that is to try and get a good result, irrespective of who we were playing, and it is important to take that on."

Loan signing Johan Elmander netted a brace whilst Olsson, Anthony Pilkington, Leroy Fer and Steven Whittaker were also on target.
