Northern Ireland boss O'Neill rejects Sunderland

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill has rejected the chance to manage Sunderland and is now considering taking over the Scotland national team.

O'Neill was offered the opportunity to succeed Simon Grayson as manager of the Black Cats who are struggling this season.

Sunderland are currently rooted to last position on the Championship standings and look set to face their second relegation in two seasons.

Despite being courted by Scotland, O'Neill is reportedly set to be offered a new deal by Northern Ireland which could see him earn £500,000 a year.

O'Neill resides in Edinburgh and will likely be tempted by the opportunity to manage the Scottish national team.

He is also reported to have told Northern Ireland bosses that he wishes to talk to the SFA about becoming the new Scotland manager.

SFA chief Stewart Regan made an official move on Wednesday as Sunderland weigh up a swoop.
