Niemi: Fulham asked me about Hodgson

Fulham goalkeeper Antti Niemi has revealed he was asked about new manager Roy Hodgson by the club's board.

He said: "They had a shortlist and asked me about him a few days ago. It is not difficult to guess that my opinion of him is very positive.

"When he took over as manager of Finland, he came to London to see me and asked if I would help out if needed. I played in the last three qualification games for Euro 2008 and a friendly against Spain.

"I was involved with the Finnish national team for 12 years and saw managers and coaches come and go.

"But Roy Hodgson took everything to a different level so hopefully he can do that here as well.

"He is very good at organising teams and really good at organising defences so that is what I am really looking forward to.

"We need that bit of steel back in the team, a bit of backbone.

"He also has great experience and worldwide connections.

"We are in a tough situation and it is going to be a hell of a battle but I am confident he can bring something to the team."
