Nicolas Anelka: Why I turned pro with Arsenal and not PSG

Nicolas Anelka has explained why he kicked off his pro career with Arsenal.

The French teen chose to join the Gunners in 1997 ahead of signing pro terms with PSG.

"When you know what you want, when you know what you've got, you've got ambition and a dream, we do it without really thinking too much," he told Yard.

"I was asked to sign professional at PSG. I wanted playing time with PSG, which I had not. I was told that I was too young, be patient. I was willing to wait but I had the example of Alliou, M'Boma and Nouma who did not play. They were there, they were two or three years older than me but they played very rarely. I did not want to get to the age of 19, 20 years of age and with the same result. So I said no right away. I did not want to be like them and I wanted to do what I wanted to do.

"So there were recruiters who came to take me. Arsenal, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid ... All European clubs. I thought, 'Come on, I'll go. If it does not happen with PSG, I will go elsewhere. If it does not work, at least I tried'."
