Newcastle's Taylor to miss preseason start

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor is likely to miss preseason training due to an ankle injury suffered in the U21 European Championship semifinals.

The 21-year-old defender suffered ankle ligament damage in last Wednesday's European Championship semi-final against Holland in Heerenveen.

Taylor, who does not report officially for pre-season training until July 11 after manager Sam Allardyce gave him and England team-mate James Milner a few extra days off after their summer exertions, will be sidelined for around a month.

As a result he will miss the away fixtures against Hartlepool and Carlisle, and is a big doubt for the home friendlies against Celtic and Juventus on July 26 and 29.

He is hoping to play some part in Newcastle's pre-season programme, however, and could feature in the final warm-up games away to Hull City and at home to Sampdoria on August 1 and 5.
