Newcastle's Owen delighted with England record

Michael Owen has spoken of his pride at topping his hero Gary Lineker's record and becoming England's top goalscorer in competitive games.

Owen bagged the third goal in England's 3-0 victory in Estonia on Wednesday to take him on to 23 competitive goals for his country, moving one ahead of the previous best set by Lineker.

"It is always nice to score goals and to break that record of Gary Lineker is fantastic," said Owen.

"He was an England great and he was my idol when I was a kid.

"I was an Everton supporter and a Gary Lineker fan when he played for the club so it was lovely to beat him.

"It was nice to score and good we got the three points under our belts."
