Newcastle's Owen battling to stay in England plans

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is facing a clouded England future under manager Fabio Capello.

Capello is still to be won over by fit-again Owen, who was a second-half substitute in Wednesday's defeat in France. The Italian intends to persist with his lone striker formation, with Manchester United's Wayne Rooney the man he wants leading the line.

"I hope the manager knows what I'm about," Owen said. "I am sure he has seen me play - he has watched videos. I missed a lot of qualifying for Euro 2008 through my cruciate knee ligament injury but when I came back I played quite well and scored a couple against Russia and one against Israel and Estonia."

Asked to explain what Capello was trying to achieve in Paris, Owen laughed: "You ask him."
