Newcastle's Owen assured over surgeon

Steve Harper and Alan Shearer have assured Michael Owen he will return from surgery in Germany in tip-top condition.

Owen is currently in Dr Ulrike Muschaweck's clinic in Munich, a path tread before by Harper and Shearer, who both had successful hernia operations under the top specialist in Germany.

And Shearer told The Chronicle: "When I went to see her I was back playing on the 11th day.

"It's amazing how much time she takes off your recovery."

This time last season Harper bravely carried on playing even though he was clearly in trouble with his hernia while Shay Given recovered from the bowel injury he sustained in a clash with Marlon Harewood at West Ham.

And the Toon keeper confirmed: "Michael Owen could not be in better hands as Dr Muschaweck has a fantastic set-up.

"It is very professional and is world-renowned, with state-of-the-art facilities.

"And if my experience is anything to go by, Dr Muschaweck will have Michael back fully fit and playing again in the shortest possible time.

"He will be assessed today and if it is a hernia it will be done in an hour.

"I had a double hernia operation last November. One was done one day and the other the following day.

"But it is not rocket science as the hernia is simply popped back into place and stitched up."

There are all sorts of estimates as to how long Owen will be sidelined, a lot of them by people who are more concerned about England than Newcastle United.

And Harper added: "Mine was a double hernia and I was fit again in five weeks.

"But because Shay was injured and I played on, mine was way further down the line than Michael is at the moment.

"And don't forget as a keeper I did not have to run about as much as a striker."
