Newcastle's de Jong: This has been the worst season ever for me!

Siem de Jong has stated that it has been a nightmare debut season for him at Newcastle United.

De Jong arrived at Newcastle from Ajax over the summer and a lot was expected from the Dutch star.

However, persistent injuries have meant that de Jong has barely featured at all for the Magpies and with the campaign set to reach its conclusion, the attacking midfielder has gone on to suggest that the current season has been the worst ever in his career.

De Jong told The Chronicle: "It has been the worst season ever for me. Last season I had a couple of smaller injuries, with five or six weeks at most out. The first one I had here was four months - it was more than I had in the previous seven years of my career. It has been really tough.

"It hasn't always been easy to cope but I wanted to stay at the club. I didn't want to go and train somewhere else by myself. I didn't want to go back to Holland for four months to recover - I wanted to get to know the city, to start living here and really give myself a chance of settling in.

"It's been different. It's a different rhythm for me, you live by yourself and train by yourself. My girlfriend is here all the time so I'm not on my own - there's been a lot of time when it's been just me and her.

"It's a different rhythm, you don't feel part of the team as much as you'd like but I have got to know them."
