Newcastle's Barton impresses in reserves return

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton scored in the reserve-team's 3-1 defeat of Wigan last night.

The 25-year-old has yet to play competitively for the first team since his £5.8million summer transfer from Manchester City after breaking a metatarsal in a pre-season friendly, but he continued his recovery by playing 65 minutes for the second string.

He opened the scoring after 19 minutes, volleying home from close range, before Frank Wiafe Danquah and a deflected Matty Pattison strike put the hosts further ahead at half-time.

Chris McCaughtrie scored Wigan's consolation seven minutes before the final whistle.
