Newcastle United will not be rushed into making their next managerial appointment.
The Evening Chronicle says the Magpies held talks with Remi Garde over the weekend but those concluded after United left the capital following the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.
Newcastle are eager to get their appointment right and while Garde is still in the race for the job, United have two or three other candidates in mind.
Managing director Lee Charnley must weigh up whether to go for candidates who are currently out of a job, or wait 18 weeks until the end of the season.
Mike Ashley is being kept in touch with developments but he has left the job of appointing a new head coach to Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr.
