Newcastle Jets and the Professional Footballers' Association will do everything in their power to prevent toubled defender Ljubo Milicevic from leaving the club.
The former Melbourne Victory man walked out on the Jets this week after a spat with coach Gary van Egmond and is believed to not be considering a return to Newcastle.
PFA chief Brendan Schwab said he has spoken to Milicevic and that things were in the process of being sorted out.
"Ljubo has approached us, we've had a meeting and Ljubo maintains ambitions to play at the highest possible level, he's very focused in that regard," Schwab said.
"We are dealing with a very gifted player who, not withstanding his spell out of the game, has shown what he's capable of since joining the Jets.
"As for the matter with Newcastle, that will be discussed over the next day or so.
"He remains a contracted player at the club and those commitments are legally binding. That's fully understood by Ljubo."
