Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell is on Newcastle United's radar.
Ridgewell is expected to be made available by Birmingham for the January market.
The Journal says Toon boss Alan Pardew tried and failed to sign defensive cover in the August window, with a deal for Ridgewell thought to have broken down at the 11th hour.
He is sure to be among suitors when the market reopens.
