Newcastle United are battling to find a buyer for Alan Smith.
The People says Smith's £60,000-a-week wages are proving a stumbling block.
He is now in the last year of his contract and will not be offered a new one, and would be willing to help pay his wages elsewhere.
Leeds United have been linked with the veteran.
