Newcastle step up interest for Bayer Leverkusen striker Eren Derdiyok

Bayer Leverkusen striker Eren Derdiyok is in the sights of Newcastle United.

The Daily Mail says chief scout Graham Carr went to watch the 6ft 3ins striker play for Switzerland against Liechenstein and saw him open the scoring after just 15 minutes. Carr is also planning to watch him again at the weekend as Leverkusen play Werder Bremen.

Manager Alan Pardew is under pressure to sign a striker and has so far been rebuffed in his efforts to bring in Mevlut Erding from Paris St Germain while the asking price for Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch is considered too high.

Another possible Jermain Defoe is not keen on a move to the North East.
