Newcastle skipper Thompson hoping to go out on a high at EnergyAustralia

Newcastle Jets captain Matt Thompson is hoping he can experience a victory in his last match at EnergyAustralia Stadium with the club.

The 27-year old is off to incoming A-League club Melbourne Heart next season but before that he has one more home and away match and a finals series to play with the club he joined five seasons ago.

The Jets take on Adelaide United tonight and Thompson hopes he can help guide his team to a win in what will likely be his last home match in Jets colours.

"I've been here for five years, this is a second home to me and I've enjoyed my time here," said Thompson. "I definitely want to go out a winner, it looks like this won't be my last game this year - but it looks like it might be my last one here.

"So it would be nice to go out with three points and obviously better our chances of pushing up the ladder, but as far as we're concerned we've got a few games ahead of us and I'm just looking forward to tomorrow night."

The Jets need a win to enhance their chances of finishing higher than sixth place but Thompson said some joy for the fans was also a major goal for tonight's fixture.

"We want to go out there and show the fans that we mean business and we want to show them appreciation for the year," he added.

"It wasn't exactly a great year, there have been ups and downs definitely and we want to show our thanks for them coming out every game."
