Newcastle Jets youngster Sean Rooney is making the most of a second chance.

The 20-year old was one of Sydney FC's best in last season's National Youth League triumph but the club discarded him and he now finds himself in Jets colours.

What makes the move even more difficult is the loss of Rooney's mother to cancer in May after his father passed away four years earlier.

It could have been easy for him to throw in the towel but he kept at it and now is enjoying playing some good football in Newcastle.

Rooney's best mate and teammate, Jason Naidovski, who scored the winner against Wellington Phoenix on Sunday (supplied by Rooney), said he is just enjoying being able to run around and play football.

"He's a real conservative guy that keeps things in," Naidovski said.

"After his mum died I just said to him that I am here as a mate, as a brother and I am here for a chat, a laugh or whatever you want.

"I think now that his mum is not suffering any more it is a lot better for Sean and it is a massive relief off his shoulders."
