Newcastle's Pardew praises Remy for giving up hat-trick chance

Loic Remy has been praised for giving up the opportunity to score a hat-trick for Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

The French striker, who missed a first-half penalty, had two goals to his name when referee Martin Atkinson again pointed to the spot late in the 5-1 win over Stoke City.

Toon boss Alan Pardew admitted that Remy should have not taken the first one but was delighted to see him step aside and give Papiss Cisse the chance to complete the rout in the 80th minute.

"We had words about the penalty, as Loic shouldn't have taken the first one, Yohan (Cabaye) should," he told Sky Sports.

"In the second half the game was probably won by then, so I wasn't that involved in the decision.

"The team made the decision, which was a nice one."
