Newcastle's Owen undergoes minor groin surgery

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen underwent surgery on a minor groin problem whilst out with an injured ankle.

The England international injured his ankle in late January when the Magpies lost to Manchester City and is expected to be sidelined until mid-March and during his time out, decided to have minor groin surgery.

"Michael Owen has gone through a period of rehab on an ankle injury that he had," said interim boss Chris Hughton.

"He also had a minor - very minor - groin repair which came in line with the period of time he is out with his ankle.

"It certainly hasn't hindered or increased the period of time he is going to be out.

"We are hoping he will be training within a week and available for the Hull game."
