Newcastle United are still hoping to sign Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
The Toon were negotiating with the French club last month regarding the summer transfer of the 28-year old but Ligue 1 rivals Marseille unwantedly got involved.
However, the Magpies feel the path may now be clear to go after Gomis who is also attracting interest from German side Schalke.
