Newcastle receive Milner injury boost

Newcastle have been handed some much-needed good news after club physio Derek Wright revealed James Milner's foot is not broken.

The England Under-21 winger left Anfield on crutches following Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, sparking fears he had broken a metatarsal.

However, scans have revealed only heavy bruising, meaning he could return for The Magpies' clash with Birmingham a week on Monday.

Magpies physio Derek Wright confirmed: "James had an X-ray at Anfield and fortunately this showed there was no break and there is no damage to the metatarsal.

"But his foot is badly bruised and he will have a scan in the next 48 hours which will give us a more subtle investigation.

"We put him on crutches to go home to Newcastle so there was no weight on the injury, but he has always been a quick healer and he always has the desire to play.

"And while injuries of this type can keep some players out for a couple of weeks, we are hoping he will be okay for Birmingham next Monday night.''
