Newcastle ready to drop Townsend interest in favour of QPR winger Phillips

Newcastle United are ready to shift their focus from Tottenham's Andros Townsend to QPR winger Matt Phillips, according to The Telegraph.

The report claims that the Magpies find Spurs chairman Daniel Levy's £14million valuation of the player too high and are planning to end their interest in the 24-year-old.

Townsend is keen on leaving White Hart Lane in January as he is currently frozen out of the squad by manager Mauricio Pochettino, with his last first team experience coming in the Europa League against Anderlecht on October 22.

However, Phillips is considered to be available for as low as £5m and makes a more sensible proposition for the Magpies who under Steve McClaren are looking to reinvigorate their squad this month.
