Newcastle United want Wigan Athletic to drop their asking price for James McCarthy.
The Sunday Sun says Alan Pardew's No 1 target remains Wigan's McCarthy, but the £15m price tag on the Ireland international may be the stumbling block.
The midfielder is also interesting Liverpool and Everton.
