Newcastle pull clear of relegation places

Three second half goals saw Newcastle climb out of the Premiership drop zone with a 3-0 win at Portsmouth. Michael Owen opened the scoring in the 52nd minute before Obafemi Martins and Danny Guthrie sealed Newcastle's first league win in five attempts and their first away triumph this season.

"We played exceptionally well and bossed the game for long periods - the performance had lots of quality," said Toon boss Joe Kinnear.

"Not many teams will put three past Portsmouth down here as it's a tough place to come.

"We are on a decent run now and it gives us confidence for our next game against Tottenham next week."
