Newcastle owner Constantine defends club after Covic comments

Newcastle Jets owner Con Constantine has defended the club after comments from departing goalkeeper Ante Covic. Covic last week joined Swedish club Elfsborg on a three-year deal and when leaving told media sources that the Jets owed a number of players unpaid superannuation and other bonuses.

But Constantine has defended the club and lashed out at Covic.

"I won't have him bring down the club in the way in which he has," said Constantine.

"He would speak to the CEO, John Tsatsimas once a week and twice a day to his coach.

"He was the club's PFA representative and not once did he have any issues with the club in regards to these issues he made up.

"He came out with all these accusations, deflecting blame on the club, when it was really personal issues that made his snap decision.

"He left like a thief in the night. Up until two days before he came out with all this, he and his manager was ready to put pen to paper on a new deal.

"I know the real reason why he left, but it's not for me to say."
