Newcastle owner Ashley ponders Carver, Beardsley credentials

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley could look within for a replacement for Alan Pardew.

The Daily Star says John Carver, who will be 50 next month, was told on Monday night he'll be in temporary charge for tomorrow's game against Burnley and Saturday's FA Cup clash at Leicester, following Alan Pardew's resignation.

But club owner Mike Ashley has not ruled out keeping Carver and coach Steve Stone in charge for a longer period.

Ashley will also consider the claims of Hull boss Steve Bruce and at least two overseas candidates.

And Toon legend Peter Beardsley, currently working with the club's under-21s, is another option.

But Ashley is willing to give Carver an extended spell, possibly until the end of the season, before making a final decision.

He sees Carver as a safe pair of hands, someone who knows the club inside out and a popular figure with the players.
