Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has dismissed Wigan chairman Dave Whelan's furious attack on him this week.

The pair have clashed before as bosses of rival sportswear firms.

A pal of Ashley told The Sun: "I suspect Whelan is commenting on the Newcastle business because those guys are about to re-enter competition on sports retailing. I just think Mike will laugh it off."
