Newcastle United are planning a £4 million bid for Celtic defender Stephen McManus.

The Sunday Mail says big Mick - who scored in yesterday's 3-1 win over Hibs and is contracted at Parkhead until summer 2011 - was recommended to United boss Joe Kinnear and he has asked contacts about the star's ability.

With finances tight at the Toon, Kinnear may try to offer Gordon Strachan one of his players as part of the deal to reduce the cost.

And the name that tops the list is 22-year-old Spanish left-back Jose Enrique.
