Newcastle United are closing in on a £7 million deal for Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita.

The Daily Mail says Anita, 23, plays at left back for the Dutch club but he is also a useful defensive midfielder.

Newcastle had checked on various Ajax players but signing Anita would cover for the possible exits of Danny Simpson and Cheick Tiote.

Anita came through the Ajax academy and has made more than 100 first-team appearances.
