Chancel Mbemba's proposed move to Newcastle United has hit a snag with reports suggesting the Congolese defender has differing birth dates.

Anderlecht's Mbemba is believed to be 20 as his date of birth reads August 8, 1994 but there are a few discrepancies that suggest he is both older and younger than what his current age suggests.

Mbemba's DOB in Congo DR is stated as August 8, 1988 while his registration when he signed with Anderlecht in 2011 reads 1995. The year 1991 as a birth date for Mbemba also featured as his details for an African Cup of Nations match.

But the player himself has revealed that he had MRI bone tests to determined his exact age which is indeed 20, turning 21 next month.

"I have given evidence to Anderlecht to make sure they're not taking any risks," he said.

"I've passed scientific tests to determine my exact age. In Africa, when people do not have money, they are ready to invent anything to make money."

Despite the reports, however, it is believed that Mbemba will soon complete an £8.5million move to St James' Park where he will reunite with former Anderlecht teammate Aleksandar Mitrovic.
