Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has spoken of the riots last week in Senegal.
Tiote admits the players feared for their lives in Senegal during their African Nations Cup tie with Ivory Coast.
Tiote told the Evening Chronicle: “It was frightening. We were stuck in the middle of the pitch so thankfully we didn’t get any injuries but we were fearful.
“Once the referee had decided the game was abandoned we were escorted straight to the airport and we flew back to Ivory Coast.
“Thankfully I got back safe and well. It was a difficult game in Senegal.
“It was always going to be because the atmosphere was so bad.
“Thankfully nothing serious happened to us and we weren’t hurt, so that was the good thing.”
