Newcastle United are closing on a deal for Lille midfielder Thiago Maia.

Le 10 Sport says an agreement is close between Lille and Newcastle over a loan deal with the option of a permanent switch.

The fee to trigger a full-time transfer next summer would be €25m (£22m).

Lille only signed the player 12 months ago but are already ready to move him on in the hope of turning a profit.

Newcastle begin their league campaign by hosting Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park on August 11.
