Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has questioned how beneficial a winter break would be for England.
Shearer says England must do something to keep their elite players fresh.
He told The Sun: "We're not going to cut the number of teams, the number of games. And the cup competitions, especially the FA Cup, are still very important to all our clubs.
"So what solution is left? The winter break - and I believe it's time to look at that very seriously.
"The trouble is when? The games over Christmas are big box-office and a huge tradition. I grew up going to games on Boxing Day and New Year's Day and people love those games over the festive period.
"I also know teams like Chelsea, United and Manchester City might jump on a plane and play a friendly in Dubai or somewhere like that to fill the gap.
"But as a player you would still be refreshed and relaxed by the escape from the intensity of it all, physically and, just as importantly, mentally. That makes a big difference, especially into your 30s.
"I am convinced it will come in sooner rather than later. But, unfortunately, it won't come in in time to help this manager."
