Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer insists he never rejected a move to Manchester United - as he was never given the chance!

Shearer has revealed that Manchester United were interested in signing him before he joined Blackburn Rovers in 1992... but missed out when they failed to return a phone call.

"After talks [with Kenny Dalglish] I went back home and had a call from someone at Manchester United," the 44-year-old told BBC Sport.

"They were interested, they wanted to sign me. I said 'I've promised Kenny I'd give him an answer within two or three days, I intend to do that. I would love to have talks with you.

"I never had a phone call back from Manchester United, so it was never an option."
