Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes low expectations can work in the favour of new England coach Roy Hodgson.
The West Bromwich Albion manager's appointment has been met with criticism in some quarters.
Shearer told The Journal: "It's going to be really tough for England at the Euros because the planning hasn't been ideal. However, I have a great respect for Roy and what he's done within the game.
"Everybody thought Harry would get the job and yet he hasn't. So everyone now has to get behind Roy and give him as much support as Roy needs. For the first time in a long time we are probably going into a tournament with no huge expectations. And that could turn out to be a good thing for England and Roy.
"We won't turn up thinking we're going to win it this time because of what's gone on in the past three or four months.
"But we all remember Denmark getting to the European Championship in 1992 (when they were late call-ups because Yugoslavia were thrown out due to the civil war at the time).
"They didn't have great preparation and yet went on to win that tournament."
