Newcastle legend Alan Shearer says English football has been "embarrassed" by the Sam Allardyce saga.

But he's backed Gareth Southgate as the right man to lead the Three Lions forward.

"I think they've made the right decision in giving it to Gareth [Southgate]," Shearer said on the BBC's Match of the Day.

"He'll know a lot of the players from the Under-21s. It gives everyone a bit of time to sit down and reflect but it's been such an embarrassing week for English football.

"I didn't think it could get any lower when we were beaten by Iceland at the Euros, but we have. I think we're at rock bottom now. So there's only one way to go now."
